February 05, 2020

Who says that all your sacrifices and hard work goes unnoticed?
Uncle Muniandi, the roti man (bread man) who has devoted his life to selling kaya bread in Balik Pulau, Penang in Malaysia for the last 30 years recently got a lifetime award for his humble service that has kept his family going.

The mural was truly an honour to a simple man and unsung hero like him. Uncle Muniandi’s hard work has helped him raise a doctor, lawyer, and even a chemical engineer.
Contemporary graffiti artist Acit Raman Abdullah, the man behind the larger than life mural, on 21 July, posted an exchange between him and 'Uncle Muniandi' on his Facebook page.

"He is a legend in Balik Pulau. Everybody recognises him. He should be honoured as an icon during Merdeka Day or Malaysia Day!” noted Acit in the Facebook post.

His heartfelt tribute posted, has since gone viral with over 7.6k reactions, 273 comments and over 2.1k shares.
The amazing Uncle Muniandi mural was one of the four murals that were commissioned by the National Art Gallery and the Culture and Arts Department for the festival, that was out together in an effort to promote the Kuala Lumpur Biennale 2020, the festival was held from 19 July to 21 July.

In an article published by The Star, Deputy Tourism, Arts, and Culture Minister Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik said the artists were free to find their own inspirations for the murals.
