August 06, 2016

The wait is over for Malaysian Pokemon fans!

It’s Go time for Pokemon fans in Malaysia as the biggest mobile game in US history Pokemon Go, is now here. From Google Earth and now Pokemon Go, the app was understood to have been released for both android and Apple users at 8am and social media saw screenshots of Pokemon fans sharing their experiences, finally!

Besides Malaysia, the other countries where you can now go catch em all are Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Taiwan, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Solomon Islands, Micronesia Federations and Palau.

How to get Pikachu from the start?
Bulbasaur, Charmander or Squirtle - Pokemon Go lets you choose one of these familiar faces as your starting Pokemon. But you can choose Pikachu as your starter too.
  • When the game kicks off and three normal starters appear on your map, you should walk away.
  • When you've moved far away enough, the Pokemon will pop up again.
  • Keep going - it might take a few tries - and Pikachu will appear!

Pokemon Go could get expensive very quickly
One way of preventing it is to delink your credit or debit card from your App Store account and use pre-paid credit instead.

You can also do two things to prevent their kids from racking up large bills on iOS:
  • Never, ever give them your iTunes password
  • Turn on restrictions that prevent in-app purchases. Navigate to Settings -> General -> Restrictions and turning restrictions on. Then scroll down to In-App Purchases and disallow those
  • Or tap on Password Settings (which may not appear if you have Touch ID turned on) and force the device to prompt for your password with every purchase
  • In Android, go to the Google Play store, and tap on Settings. Scroll to User Controls and tap on "Require authentication for purchases". You can change the settings here to require authentication for all purchases through Google Play.

Getting started

However, in Malaysia, the game isn’t really for all. Yesterday, the Federal Territories Mufti Datuk Dr Zulkifli Mohamad al-Bakri said Muslims are forbidden to engage themselves in the virtual world of Pokemon characters and play the reality game of Pokemon GO due to the principles of maslahah (public interest) and harmful consequences.

He said the ruling was made at the Federal Territories Islamic Legal Consultative Committee meeting on Aug 1. The game, he added promoted a search for power and deities with certain powers which could lead to gambling.

“After studying the opinions of religious scholars and the fatwa (edict) issued, we agreed that the edict has a basis and that Pokemon Go and all the Pokemon characters should be avoided as it can bring harm. The game promoted a search for power and deities with certain powers which could lead to gambling. Based on previous cases, the game also allows foreign surveillance, breach of private space, and could also lead to safety issues, such as accidents and distractions,” he was quoted.

Meanwhile, in Singapore, a police advisory has been issued

I've stopped once it said I gotta get up and walk about though, work that needs me glued to the couch with the laptop on my lap. I guess this will be a good reason for some physical activity very soon. Remember to watch your kids parents and be safe all ye Pokemon trainers!

Caught my first Pokemon!

Poke Facts
  • This year is PokĂ©mon’s 20th anniversary
  • The games PokĂ©mon Red and PokĂ©mon Green were launched in 1996
  • PokĂ©mon is a contraction of the term Pocket Monster
  • It was created by Satoshi Tajiri and was based on his childhood interest in insect collecting
  • There are a total of 722 PokĂ©mons in the main series’ games. Only the 151 first generation PokĂ©mon are available in PokĂ©mon Go at the moment
  • There are a total of six generations of PokĂ©mon game franchise
  • The seventh generation of games, titled PokĂ©mon Sun and PokĂ©mon Moon, are set to be released in November

The game created global controversies with players looking for Pokemon at national cemetery and military base. A couple had also abandoned their two-year-old son for the quest. The parents, 27-year-old Brent Daley and Brianne Daley, 25, were later arrested on charges of child endangerment and child neglect after the incident. In Japan, there have been at least 36 accidents involving drivers and cyclists. There have also been reports of armed robberies in areas with high concentrations of Pokemon Go players.

From Google Earth to Pokemon Go

  • John Hanke, 49, chief executive of Niantic is the man behind PokĂ©mon Go, jointly-developed with Nintendo
  • Before the location-based pocket monsters phenomenon, he was responsible for Google Earth
  • In 2005, Hanke oversaw the development and execution of Google Earth, Google Maps and Google Street View
  • He had been with the search giant for more than a decade after the acquisition of his previous company, Keyhole — which specialised in geospatial data visualisation applications
  • At Google, Hanke started Niantic Labs to explore the overlap between mobile apps and location-based entertainment
  • In 2011, Niantic launched Ingress, a storydriven, augmented reality multiplayer game that required players to interact at physical locations around the world.
  • The concept for PokĂ©mon Go was truly sparked with the 2014 April Fool’s collaboration between Nintendo and Google — PokĂ©mon Challenge.
  • Google Maps users could find various PokĂ©mon around the globe from the comfort of their homes
  • The response was so great that soon after, Hanke struck a deal with Nintendo to take the concept to the next level.
  • For this, Hanke’s motivation was for an app to get people out of their homes to interact more with others and do more exercise
  • With 75 million downloads to date in 38 countries, it looks like a case of mission accomplished
