Maravan Continues to Make an Impression at International Film Festivals

“All these festivals are promoting and exhibiting our film, our country, our language, our culture, all over the world,” – SD Puvanendran
Maravan (The Bravery) recently made it ways to the Hong Kong World International Film Festival 2016. This makes
it the 7th international recognition for the film. Maravan had also
beat some 4,000
submissions from 105 countries in the 2016
International Open Film Festival New York & Dhaka (IOFF), winning the Country
Best Award.
The film has also secured a
spot in the semi-finalist of Phoenix Film Festival Melbourne (PFFM) 2016.
Maravan also made it
presence at the film Russian International Film Festival, Singapore World
International Film Festival, Barcelona Planet Film Festival and Scenecs the International
Debut Film Festival.
The local award ceremonies must be missing something as Maravan was only nominated for 3 categories under the non Bahasa Malaysia Film (best film, Best director, best screenplay) in the Festival Filem Malaysia-28.
Released
last October, Maravan is SD Puvanendran’s directorial debut, written and
produced by M. Chandran,
vocalist from the band The Keys. Running at 120 minutes, the cast includes Kumaresh Haridass, Denes Kumar, Kavitha
Thiagarajan, Logan, Seelan, Pushpa Narayanan and Sangeetha Krishnasamy.
Maravan tells the story of a rubber tapper’s journey
from rags-to-riches gone wrong amidst an illicit entanglement with human
trafficking and drug trade, was inspired by true events. SD Puvanendran took to
Facebook has been pleased with the film’s international performance, after it
raked in over RM91, 000 at the local box office.

It
was also understood that the success of Maravan in earning international
recognition has inspired its director to produce a 'Malaysian film' focusing on
the rich language diversity in the country. SD Puvanendran plans to produce a
film which will serve as a lesson to be learnt from online scam, incorporating
all languages of the communities in the country.
